Gear Up and Drive Traffic to Your Website!

07.01.2009 07:36:50

The first and foremost for any website to generate traffic is Website Optimization. But not to be so hung up over dedication to the needs of search engines; one must not forget that the website is actually being built for humans who are the ultimate revenue generators. This being well taken care of, you are then ready to generate traffic to your site.

  1. Submission of Websites to Search Engines and Directories – NOT ANY MORE!!

Whether you submit your website or not, the search engines are going to find them any way. The web is crawled almost every day and you have no escape! However, whether you are accepted by the search engines or not depends on your eligibility criterea – the quality of your website, which is determined by the site's organization, ease of navigation, web structure, content and quality inbound links.

You may still submit your website to search engines if you feel the urge to and there is no harm going to cause you. Free submissions are available at:

    Google Site Submit

    Yahoo Site Submit

    MSN Site Submit

    DMOZ Site Submit

  2. Participate in Online Forums

Find out forums related to your website's topic. Simply do the search as follows: “your keyword forum”. Once you are registered at a forum, include your website link in your signature line. You may comment, post a question, offer advice etc. This can help you establish authority in your niche and become popular to drive the individuals to your website, and create one way links. But No No to spams. Simply contribute your knowledge to genuinely help and support others.

  3. Write and Submit Articles

Write articles and let people know of your expertise and knowledge in your area to rely upon you as a resource. Submitting articles to articles directories and sending them out through newletters can entice powerful inbound links to your website. Always include a resource box under your article containing a live link back to your website with your keyword phrase included in the anchor text to improve search engine rankings. Some quality article directories:

    http://www.webpronews.com/submit

    http://www.ezinearticles.com

    http://www.ideamarketers.com

  4. Getting Inbound Links to your Site

You need quality inbound links, not just any. Quality inbound links come from quality sites. Follow every guideline a search engine looks for to deem yours as a quality website and keep the content fresh and outstanding from the rest. You will find the stream of links following you. Don't expect instant results. It's a consistent and continuous effort so just Wait and Watch!

“Reciprocal Link Exchange” has diminished value as the search engines are coming to recognize that (they are not all that stupid you see!). “Link for Content” is a good option.

  5. Give Away Free Stuffs – e-Book, Reports etc

Give away free ebooks and reports related to your website, and include your Url within. Give them to other website owners as well to market for you. People love free stuffs. Now if you can't have one of your own, there are plenty of them you have ready access to. Use them to get email subscribers. Free ebooks are an excellent way of driving traffic virally.

  6. Write a Press Release

A press release is not an ad or a sales page. If you've just got a new product or a website you are anxious to get attention to, submitting a press release is ideal. A focused, precise, well-written press release emphasizing the uniqueness of the product/service in subject is hard to be wavered by a journalist. Some good submission sites are:

    http://www.businesswire.com

    http://www.pmewswire.com

  7. Publish Newsletter

Free and useful information are always welcomed by people. A newsletter is one of the best ways to get the traffic flocking to your website. Capture the email addresses in exchange for a free publication and offer to send out newsletters at a pre-determined period, say, monthly. Newsletters may also be submitted to publication directories:

    http://www.ezinelisting.com

    http://www.ezinefinder.com

  8. Write Testimonials

If you write a favourable testimonial for a product/service and submit it to the vendor, he will be very receptive to it and will post it on his website. Make sure that the testimonial includes your website address below your signature with a live link pointng to your website. This will be much like a resource box within the articles.

  9. Create a Blog

Blogs are being used by businesses to communicate in an informal manner with the customers and keep them updated about the industry developments. You may also build up informative categories in your blog. The idea is to keep the visitors interested and provide the information they are looking for. Therefore stick to the theme, be informative, clear, concise, and regular at posting (keep a schedule).

  10. Social Networking

With the importance of developing inbound links, social networking is not likely to go away.

It is a major way of getting quality inbound links to your website. Select a few social networking websites based on your niche and work them on a consistent basis. Don't be overwhelmed by the wide list of choices available. Stick to a schedule for socialising. Show your enthusiasm and sincerity for what you do. Excellent way to boost traffic provided you do it!

How to Get Google Sitelinks

29.12.2008 04:34:19
Many of us have noticed below some Google search results,  a set of links to pages within the site. These are referred to as  "Sitelinks". Like many of its algorithms, the specifics of Google's "Sitelinks" programme are unknown too; however, some general facts could be deciphered. Google's sitemap guru, Vanessa Fox explained in her blog entry "Information about Sitelinks", that Sitelinks are generated automatically, and that they are designed to provide searchers with more valuable search results.

The idea behind generating sitelinks could be:
  • A response to gather data about what the users intent is when providing a specific query based upon users activity.
  • A way to more effectively use the space on the results page because subsequent pages, even though indented, take more space than do the new Sitelinks.
The sites with Sitelinks were found to have the under mentioned in common, which may or may not be the triggering factors of sitelinks:
  • The site ranked first or were one of the topmost for the search word
  • Large websites containing major sections that are easy to distinguish
  • Easily spiderable, structured navigation
  • Fairly high natural search traffic
  • High click through rates from the search results page
  • Useful outbound links
  • Inbound links from high quality sites
  • Site age is several years or older
Given below are the things that we may do to improve our odds of getting sitelinks:
  • Create structured navigation using HTML features like UL and text links. Use CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) to present menus with desired appearance. Lists can be displayed horizontally or vertically of any size or color. Background images,  colors and border could be added to create the appearance of a box or button. All this can be done with text links.
  • Organize navigation to present only the logical destinations that visitors may choose frequently. Visitors should'nt be overwhelmed with too many menus. Second level menu may be added, if necessary, using CSS hover menus.
  • Brand the website with a unique name to increase the click through rates on natural search results.
  • Add useful and relevant titles and META descriptions to the site, especially the home page, to improve click through rates from the SERP.
  • Make the site content rich with useful outbound links to entice the visitors and browse through.
From what I understand is that, we must optimize our website for the targeted users, enrich the website with useful contents and outbound links, and work towards building reputation and trust by way of which we will entice heavy traffic. And that's how we could get recognised by Google and in the due course, be considered for Sitelinks. Sitelinks are completely automated and Google shows them only if it thinks they would serve the user better.

Are You Social?

23.12.2008 06:50:41
You see a boy over the internet sweeping through Facebook, Orkut or YouTube and wave him off with a despising smile saying "...what a nonsense killer of time!". Now stop doing that! And if you didn't, you'd rather choose to close down your business and spend some penny for grapes before you make your way to home.

If you're selling a product or a service, social networks and websites like what I've mentioned are for you too! Use them to announce and enhance the visibility....of your or your business or both. Simply do Social Media Marketing!

So What is Social Media Marketing and Why Would You Do That?

Social Media Marketing is a form of online marketing and it simply means using websites such as Facebook, MySpace, Stumbleupon, Twitter etc to project and enhance the visibility of your business. It is the process of promoting your site or business through social media channels which is a powerful strategy that will get you links, attention and massive amounts of traffic. No business can stand alone on the internet. Your business and marketing success depends on the connections and networks you create. So dont' stay alone...go social!

How Does It Generate Visibility?

Visibility is generated by creating dialogue through blogs, posting comments, posting answers to questions, forums etc. These websites are considered Web 2.0 applications in that they allow dialogue and feedback through blogs, comments, questions and answers, and via personal messaging built into these websites.

What Value Does It Offer?

Creating viral content and developing link baits, and successfully getting them popular on social media websites have multiple benefits:

  • Generate Primary and Secondary Traffic. Primary traffic is the amount of visitors who come directly from social media websites. Secondary traffic is referral traffic from websites which link to and send you visitors, after they come across your content through the social sites.

Primary + Secondary Traffic = Community

  • High Quality Links. Becoming popular on social news websites like Digg or StumbleUpon will get you a large number of links, some of which may be topically relevant.

Links = Better Search Engine Rankings

Why Prefer Over Traditional Marketing?

Social media marketing tends to be a relatively cheap tool and facilitates anyone to distribute and/or access information freely. Traditional media or mass media such as TV, radio, print ad campaigns etc tends to be relatively expensive and need large financial capital in order to publish information (often skewing its uses to commercial efforts).

Social networking and social media are the new internet kids on the block but they are the most powerful forms of generating traffic. Simply use them to increase brand awareness, sell your products/services and establish expert status.
